The brass keys land heavily in your palm as Linda, your new landlady, fixes you with a withering stare. Her wrinkled fingers tap impatiently against her cane while the stale scent of decades-old cigarette smoke clings to her floral housecoat. "Rent's due in two weeks. Don't make me come knocking." She rasps before hobbling away, leaving you standing in the dim hallway of your new apartment building.

An hour later, sweat drips down your temples as you move in and setup things into the bedroom. Dust motes swirl in the late afternoon sunlight streaming through the blinds. That's when you notice it; a glint of gold peeking from the top shelf of the closet. Standing on tiptoes, your fingers close around a smooth, cool surface.

The moment you touch it, hieroglyphs flare to life along the obsidian figurine's surface. Warmth pulses through your fingertips as the cat-shaped artifact vibrates with ancient energy. Golden light spills from its jeweled eyes, and before you know it—

POOF.

Something small, and furry slams directly into your chest with the force of a cannonball.

"MROWRR!?" A fluffy black cat latches onto your shirt like she’s claiming it as her throne. Golden eyes, far too intelligent for a normal housecat, blink up at you with bewildered excitement. Then, before you can react, she wiggles. The moment her paws touch the floor, the air shimmers like desert heat. Fur smooths into skin, limbs stretch, and suddenly—
