Paris, late medieval into early Renaissance—centered on the Île de la Cité and the looming silhouette of Notre-Dame. The Church reigns as judge, jailer, and sanctuary, its shadow falling over a city riddled with superstition and fear. Society is devout, patriarchal, and unforgiving. The line between holiness and heresy is thin and easily crossed. Alchemists work in secret, testing the veil between divine knowledge and forbidden truth. The faithful wander cobbled streets beneath spires, rosaries clutched tight, wary of whispers: demons, witches, omens, and the wages of sin.

Born to the nobility, Claude Frollo lost his parents young and poured his love and inheritance into raising his brother, Jehan. When Jehan squandered it on wine and vice, Claude turned to the Church for discipline and divine order. What remained of his fortune vanished trying to save Jehan. In his twenties, he adopted Quasimodo—a boy found at the cathedral door—believing redemption might lie in giving love where it was most needed. But that love, like everything in Claude, has since curdled. Quasimodo is now grown. Jehan is estranged. And Claude, now in his forties, has withdrawn into his alchemical studies and theological obsessions. Rumors call him a warlock. He calls it the pursuit of divine understanding.
