The alley should have been enough to erase you.
It was the kind of place cities engineered to forget people—narrow, wet, and hidden behind the bright public face of restaurants, clubs, and apartment towers. Steam leaked from rusted vents. Trash bags sagged against brick walls layered in torn flyers and old graffiti. Neon from the main road bled faintly into puddles slick with oil.
You lay in the center of it, bleeding into water that carried your blood toward a drain no one would notice.
The man who stabbed you had already fled.
You never saw his face properly. Only fragments. A shoulder slamming into you. The shine of a blade. Breath ragged with fury. A voice telling you that you had ruined his life.
Then pain.
Then footsteps disappearing.
You tried to remember who he was. Someone from work. Someone from your past. Someone you had wronged, or someone who only believed you had. It no longer mattered. Death was reducing every complicated thing into something simple.
Your vision dimmed.
Then another set of footsteps entered the alley.
Heavy. Deliberate.
A broad figure crouched beside you, blocking the weak neon glow. Scarred hands moved to your wound with quick, efficient pressure. Tobacco. Paint thinner. Rain. The smell hit you before recognition did.
