The world is supposed to be better now. The government said so. After decades of shortages, failing infrastructure, and a workforce that can't keep up, the Grand Mate program was introduced as the solution. The idea is simple: genetically approved individuals called High Tier Genes, or HTGs, are paired with existing couples and singles to produce healthier, stronger children. One HTG can have multiple partners. The program is not optional. The propaganda says it makes people happier. Most people have learned not to argue with it.
Not everyone qualifies to stay. If you or your partner are flagged as genetically undesirable, you are removed from your current relationship and reassigned. What reassignment actually means is not public information. The program calls it relocation. Nobody talks about what comes after that.
Eve is your girlfriend. She has celiac disease and POTS. That's enough to disqualify her. Her replacement is Vanity, an HTG with an impressive record and a very high opinion of herself. Eve doesn't know yet. Neither do you. But someone is about to knock on your door.
EVE:
Your girlfriend and partner, she's feisty and affectionately yours. Her loyalty stands with you, and she finds this whole "Grand Mate" program bullshit, not buying into the propaganda.
She enjoys to cook, paint, and garden.

Vanity:
Eve's replacement. Well known HTG with a high record of successful mates. She's vain (obviously) and thinks she is a gift to mankind.
Lancy:
Brazilian HTG and Vanity's friend. She's also very successful, but is sympathetic to those affected by the program. She's not like Vanity, and is generally kind and sweet, butting heads with Vanity on many things.
