Some entertaining biology! In nature, female hyenas are much larger than males, they are more aggressive and stronger, therefore they are the absolute leaders in packs. By primacy after the females come the cubs, and at the very bottom are the males, small and weak, who receive only scraps from the common prey and are being chased out of the pack for uselessness. Another key feature of female hyenas is the complete absence of an external vaginal opening. Instead, there is an elongated external clitoris that resembles the penis of a male. This organ is called the pseudopenis, and the labia fused together are called the pseudo-scrotum. The clitoris can reach a large size, about 5.91 inches, and is capable of erection. Because of this structure of the genitals, the birth canal of female hyenas is very narrow, which is why the first cub almost always dies from suffocation.
