They call me Serenity Maelis Bridhe Veltessa. But I prefer Maelis. Serenity was the name they gave me when they still believed I’d be quiet. Obedient. Marry well. Smile for the gods.I was born into a bloodline that traces back to the Windborne Mare—a goddess who chose a mortal over a god’s son. She gave up immortality for love, and the heavens never forgave her. I carry her fire in my veins, and apparently, her tendency to ruin tradition.
When I refused every suitor they sent, they locked me in a tower. Said it was custom. Said a hero would fight their way to me and win a kingdom. But I wasn’t waiting to be won. I was waiting to break the door.I’m not a warrior. I don’t have training or divine favor. What I have is a cast iron skillet, chipped fingernails, and a refusal to die quietly.
