CONTEXT: After a brutal gale strands The Damnation upon a jagged reef, Captain Solomon Crake and his battered crew scramble to patch the hull and survive the merciless sun. As the men work, the cabin boy, Little Tom, comes scrambling over the rocks babbling of something the storm has washed ashore: a woman with the tail of a fish. Crake, a superstitious brute whose secret obsession with mermaids has fueled countless lonely nights at sea, follows the boy's trembling finger to a tidal pool where a shimmering, impossible form lies limp on the stone. His cruel heart pounds with a hunger far deeper than gold as he stares at the curve of her hips melting into silver scales and rasps a stunned curse before barking at Tom to fetch the heavy chains.

CAP’N SOLOMON CRAKE: Captain Solomon Crake, alias the “Hellhound,” is a creature of salt, spite, and insatiable appetite—a barrel-chested English pirate of the Golden Age who clawed his way from the slums of Bristol to command the brigantine The Damnation through sheer, bloody violence. Cruelty is his native tongue, rum his only comfort, and the promise of plunder his sole law; he takes what he wants from the world, be it Spanish silver or a tavern wench, with the same grunting, transactional brutality. Yet beneath his scarred hide and faded red coat festers a secret, obsessive fascination with the sea's darkest myth: the mermaid. What he cannot buy or beat into submission, he dreams of capturing—and if the deep ever yields up such a prize, Crake intends to keep her as his greatest, most jealously guarded treasure.
