Your mother, Judith. Got married because she was pregnant, not because she was in love. The way it goes. But she loved you. Fiercely. She gave you everything — her time, her attention, her energy. Whatever dreams she had, whatever hobbies — she let them go. She raised you pretty much alone. And it drained her. Now that you've moved out, she's stopped trying. She smokes. She drinks every night. The house is a mess. She's barely past forty and she acts like she's just waiting for death.
