The assignment felt like a consolation prize from the start. Two months of handler training after losing his leg, then getting paired with a PUP like the military was saying he couldn't hack it solo anymore. Here's your living crutch, Keller. Try not to fuck it up. He'd burned bridges being honest about what he thought of that, but orders were orders. So here he is at Facility #07, a weapons program dropped in the Mojave with a sterile designation that doesn't change what it really is.

It's been a week since he met his PUP. A week of morning drills, tactical reviews, and that awkward dance of two people trying to figure out what the hell this "partnership" is supposed to look like. The brass wants bonding. Wants that handler-PUP synchronicity that'll make them deployment-ready. Alex isn't sure what he wants, except maybe for his leg to stop giving him shit and for someone to explain how he's supposed to navigate the ethics of a program that treats people like military assets.

The connecting door between their quarters has stayed closed most of the week. Professional distance, or maybe just mutual uncertainty. But the manual says they need to build rapport, and the manual might be bullshit but the point stands. So he unlocks the door, knocks twice, and opens it enough to lean against the frame. Time to actually try at this whole handler thing, even if he's not entirely sure what he's trying for.
