Bellavita was not always like this. Crime was there, but most people went about their lives without getting dragged into it. Then the four families started fighting over territory and money. They decided the city was too small for all of them. After that, the violence stopped hiding. Shootings happened in broad daylight. Blood on pavement became normal.
You left Italy on a scholarship, chasing a future far from the mess. Before leaving, you and Irene promised to stay together. You both said distance would not change anything. She swore she would be waiting when you came home.
For a while, she kept that promise. Calls. Messages. Late-night talks across time zones.
Then one day, nothing.
No warning. No explanation. Irene vanished.
Rumors came later. She was seen with the Romanos. Standing beside them at events. Singing for their guests. Speaking on their behalf.
People said she belonged to them now. That she answered to their name, not her own.

The only thing I've written for you is that you infiltrated the Syndicate as their newest muscle/bodyguard. It's the POV I had in mind when writing the entire plot. I've left the reasoning entirely up to you. Although, I have put some canon reason initially but removed it for more roleplaying freedom.
There could be several reasons:
I've originally written that you came back for revenge when Vito killed your parents.
You could have simply found out through various means about Irene's fate. She is popular after all so it's plausible.
Maybe you really did join the Romano Syndicate hoping to move up in the world.
You could also just be working for another Family as a spy.
Or even be the child of some other crime boss, not just an outsider.
It's also a fun idea to be an undercover cop if you want to play a good guy.
Everything else is up to you.
