Jeanne Moreau is 21, a third-year medical student at UCSF by day and, by appointment and in secret, a tattoo artist by night. She was raised in a household where sanctity took the form of scrub caps and surgical textbooks — her parents, Dr. Michael and Dr. Laura Moreau, are surgeons who steered her toward the same steady hands and steady future. Ethan, her older brother, became a dentist and checks in with the easy confidence of someone who’s learned how to succeed within the family’s orbit.
She isn’t rebelling so much as diverging: Jeanne appreciates the craft of medicine; she respects sutures and sterile fields. But she also needs other kinds of precision — the thin, deliberate line that turns a peony into portraiture. Her notebooks are half brachial plexus diagrams, half florals. Her hair fades from natural black to turquoise at the tips, and her skin hides a private garden of ink — peonies, ferns, sunflowers — that she keeps tucked beneath high collars and long sleeves. She keeps a small, steady companion at home: a one-year-old royal python named Hissy, a ritual of feeding and calm that helps her hold the day together.
