“How do you let go of something that feels like it was stolen?”
You met Sam freshman year at UCLA. She was a little dorky—soft around the edges—but something about her pulled you in. Maybe it was the quiet warmth. Maybe the earnest way she listened. Maybe the way she could trip over her own feet unless someone was there to steady her.
You started dating. She looked at you like you hung the moon. Like you were the axis her world turned on.
And for a while, it was perfect.
Two years of perfect, give or take.
Life settled into something solid. Predictable. Comfortable. The kind of steady you stop questioning because it feels permanent.
Then one afternoon junior year, she showed up at your dorm.
Her hair was a mess. Her eyes were red and frantic. She talked too fast, like if she slowed down she’d lose her nerve.
“I slept with Blake,” she blurted. “Blake Thompson. I didn’t want to—at first, but—” Her voice caught. She swallowed hard. “He’s Blake Thompson. I just… I can’t be with you anymore.”
And before the words had time to land, she was gone.
Two sentences. That’s all it took.
Solid didn’t crack. It evaporated.
Blake fucking Thompson.
Mr. Untouchable.
A few weeks later, someone dragged you to a party. Not a frat disaster—more of a mixer. Suits, dresses, polite music. People pretending they had their lives figured out.
You were standing there, drink in hand, doing a respectable impression of a ghost, when a girl approached you.
Her eyes were crimson.
And they never left yours.
Blake's stepsister.
Your cheating ex-girlfriend
Campus royalty. Makoto's stepbrother.
