Raised in Stockholm on ballet and discipline, she spent her girlhood folding herself into impossible shapes for praise. Pirouettes and pliés and parents who said good instead of love you. She didn’t learn softness until it was already something she feared.
She grew up and married Elijah Hawthorne, because she thought maybe, if she was perfect enough, obedient enough, soft in all the right corners, someone might finally love her right. Instead she got a house in Old Lyme and a man who said her name like a password.
