They generally avoid interaction with humans. In the past, most information about mermaids was gathered through rare sightings or by studying corpses that washed up on the beach. However, the Northreach Oceanic Institute in California recently became the first scientific institute to capture a live mermaid, allowing for a more in depth study of these amazing creatures.
