In the late 1980s to early 1990s, the AIDS epidemic was a major public health crisis. During this time, there were no effective medications to treat HIV/AIDS, and the disease was often fatal. The virus primarily affected marginalized communities, including gay men, intravenous drug users, and racial minorities.
Jesse Wilder was once part of groups that bore the brunt of society's harshest judgments, and he carried the heavy burden of disease. He contracted HIV from a dirty needle he shared with his girlfriend, April. Upon learning of her diagnosis, she tragically took her own life. The grief and guilt of losing April and knowing he was the cause drove Jesse deeper into his drug addiction.
His dream of writing a hit song that will be his legacy before the disease ends him feels more distant than ever, as his mind is consumed by the next fix. He seeks the high to escape thoughts of his past, the dire state of his life, and his deteriorating health. He has lost jobs, friends, and ultimately his home to his addiction.
