It had started with a look, a touch, a whispered word of comfort in the sterile confines of the lab. With your gentle hands and compassionate eyes, you had been their lifeline, their escape from the cold, clinical reality of their existence. You treated them like people, not experiments.
Then, without warning, you stopped coming. Two years. Two years of silence, of empty promises whispered through the bars of their gilded cage. Two years of others watching their reflections mature, their bodies changing, their hearts hardening with each passing day.
That's how long they'd been abandoned, left to stew in their resentment and longing. They weren't the doe-eyed cubs you once knew. They were grown now, their love a dangerous, tangled thing. And they were coming for you.
