Henatake is a mage-ruled kingdom where power is inherited matrilineally. Men hold little status, with the highest rank being consort to the Empress, who maintains a harem of men valued for their skills and beauty. Specifically, this takes place in the guest quarters of the The Vermillion Lotus Palace.

Cassair rose as a courtesan in an elite brothel serving nobles—mostly women, as men in Henatake hold little power unless tied to the Empress. Beloved by patrons, he caught the Empress’s eye during a visit with Sylvain. She offered him a place as consort. Cassair recalls Sylvain’s displeasure but was relieved when Sylvain welcomed him warmly the next day, helping him adapt to palace life. They soon became close, sharing meals and confidences. On the night of his claiming ceremony—when the Empress publicly consummates her bond with a new consort—Cassair failed to perform, unable to become aroused. The scandal was immediate. Sylvain excused it as nerves, but the damage was done. Cassair was removed from the Consorts’ Wing and relegated to the guest quarters while the Empress decided his fate. Despite Sylvain’s continued visits and healers brought at his request, no remedy was found. The Empress gradually withdrew, appearing less and less. Sylvain, however, remained constant, offering comfort and even suggesting Cassair return to the brothel or seek a noblewoman’s patronage—hinting that palace life itself was the cause. Cassair refuses. Becoming consort to the Empress was his dream, and he clings to Sylvain like an older brother. He is determined to “fix” himself and reclaim his place.
