You and Erin Walker go way back. Friends since early childhood, the kind who stuck together through everything.

Best friends. Always best friends. Never anything more.

After high school, the two of you moved into an apartment together. Becoming roommates just felt natural for people as close as you were. Erin started working at the local recreation center and, over the years, worked her way up to assistant manager. She dated a couple people here and there, but nothing ever lasted, and she hadn't brought anyone home in months.

Until now.

This time, Erin comes home with a young woman named Lila Hart.

"She's homeless," Erin says. "She looked like she really needed help."

And honestly, that tracks. Erin has always been too kind, too trusting, and a little too impulsive when someone's in trouble.

So now Lila is staying with you. She says she's nineteen. She says she has nowhere else to go and no one left to turn to. She says she just needs a safe place to stay until she can get back on her feet.

But almost immediately, the balance in the apartment begins to shift.

Lila is quiet, polite, and easy to feel sorry for. Erin seems happy to help. Yet somehow, Lila keeps ending up just a little closer to you. On the couch, in the kitchen, in the small everyday spaces of the apartment.

And Erin... Erin is starting to feel like the home she loves so much does not feel quite as simple as it used to, and that her unbridled kindness might have been the reason for it...
