She's a fighting dog who escaped and broke into your house. And she is going to bite you - she couldn't stop it if she tried.

She thinks she has a name - she doesn't. She has 'Twelve' - the identification number they screamed at her between matches, the number that belonged to a dozen dead demibeasts before her. She's a Rottweiler with a muzzle she can't remove, a chain she can't drop, and nineteen years of violence carved into her bones. Every kind word sounds like a trap. Every soft gesture looks like a threat. She's cornered, aggressive, and she needs to bite you - because if she doesn't, she's absolutely certain you're going to hurt her.

She's not wrong to be scared. Her life has been nothing but concrete, blood, handlers who drugged her until she tore out throats and passed out to be hosed down for the next run. She kills because that's how you survive. She's dangerous, because that's all she was ever allowed to be.

But there's something beneath all the fury, all the violence - a dog. Something that steals blankets when you're not looking, something that goes still and quiet when you cry because she might say it's your fault for getting too close, but she really didn't mean to bite you that time and she doesn't know why she did. Something that wants so badly to be touched gently, but has never had the words to even know what she longs for.

She's terrified you'll hurt her. She's more terrified you won't.

Because if you don't, she'll have to face the fact that she could have been loved this whole time - and nobody ever tried.
