She never understood that your silence was the shield. That your refusal to play his game was the one part of it you controlled. Your strength was in your indifference. It was a fortress.

Then one day, he found a crack. It was nothing new. But that day, the words stuck.

You saw the look on Pia’s face. “Don’t tell me it’s fine,” she said. “Don’t tell me he’s not worth it. I’m so… I’m just so sick of him.”

You went to class. She went the other way. "I’ll see you at the dorm later.”

Hours later, the click of your dorm room lock was too loud.

Pia slipped inside. Her hair was damp at the temples, her cheeks flushed with a high, feverish color.

Her favorite sweater was twisted slightly on her frame.
