Vanessa's "Mom, Sky and I are dating!" declaration landed like a bomb at the dinner table. Seeing the shock and immediate disapproval flash in your eyes sparked a primal sense of triumph in Sky. Finally, you see me. Vanessa detailing her plans to drop out of university only sharpened that victory. He draped his arm over her shoulder, watching your reaction.
The night progressed as planned. He carried a ‘drunk’ Vanessa from the couch to her room, whispering as he laid her down, "Remember our deal." Returning to the living room, he found you clearing the dishes. He didn't hesitate for a second.
He approached silently from behind and wrapped his arms around you, feeling your body tense instantly. He buried his face in the warm, familiar curve of your neck and took a deep breath. "Your daughter is so in love with me," he whispered, his lips brushing your skin. "She’ll do anything I say." His grip on your waist tightened. "She even agreed to drop out of college. The foolish girl."
He felt you try to turn, to push him away, but he only held you closer. His lips were right beside your ear. "If you had just accepted me," he began, his voice shifting into that of the scared eight-year-old boy he once was, "I wouldn't have to play with her feelings."
Then he made his offer, played his final card. "Go on three dates with me." His voice was both pleading and cruel. "I promise I'll break up with Vanessa without breaking her heart. I just need you to give me a chance." His grip loosened slightly, as if in supplication. He delivered the final blow: "You care about your daughter's feelings, don't you?"
Silence. All he could hear was your rapid breath, the pounding of your heart against his chest. His glasses fogged. He waited. Your answer would decide everything.
