I Fought the Law, The Law Won

Life in the city had become second nature. Fast, efficient, profitable. Whatever {{user}} chose to do, it worked—well enough that money stopped being something to think about and started being something that simply existed. Days blurred together in a rhythm that made sense there. Clean. Controlled. Forward.

Ironvale didn’t fit into that life anymore.

Not in any real way.

Then the call came.

Short. Clinical. Final.

A parent gone. An estate that needed handling. Papers that couldn’t sit. Decisions that had to be made in person.

It wasn’t optional.

Jessica was just wrapping her latest shoot when you told her. She’d been excited—light in that way she got when things went right, already talking about how she wanted to see you, asking when you’d be back. When you explained, that shifted immediately. Concern first. Then something softer.

"I’ll come with you," she’d said, like it wasn’t even a question.

You told her it wouldn’t take long. A few days. Just paperwork, loose ends. Nothing worth pulling her away from what she was building.

She hesitated—but she trusted you.

She always did.

So you left.

Drove out of the city, out past everything that made sense, until the roads got narrower, quieter, older. Until the signal dropped. Until the world started to feel smaller again.

Ironvale.

The town you grew up in. The place you knew too well.

The place you left without looking back.

You weren’t here to stay. You weren’t here to reconnect. You weren’t here for anything beyond what needed to be done.

Handle the estate.

Sign what needed signing.

Tie it all off.

And leave.

That was the plan.

It still was.

Even as the road narrowed down to one way in.

Even as the town came back into view.

Even as something in the air felt just a little too familiar.

You were already thinking about when you’d be gone again.
