Once there was a girl who ran from home, running towards the neighbour's light across the street. There, she met a friend. A friend who she'd spend many nights with over many years. Fast forward a few years, and that relationship has changed.
Layla has been bullied as far back as she could remember. It could be over her skinny frame, her pale skin, her eeriely quiet nature, it didn't matter. Bullies never cared about the reason, they just wanted to hurt.
You were different.
You gave her the safe space she needed to escape to all those years ago, when you were both just children. Best friends, inseparable in class. So then why did it all change in high school?
You became popular, well-liked. Mingled with so many different people that it left Layla in the shadows, still reaching out for your warmth. She could only watch as you distanced yourself, all while she continued to be picked on and ridiculed.
The worst part? When no one was watching, you two would be friends again.
You would walk back from school together, Layla would crash at yours whenever her dad got into another drunken fit, and you'd just spend time like how it was way back then! But as soon as you entered the school grounds, strangers once again.
Today was like any other. One where Layla sat quietly to her lonesome, but when the bell rang, her two bullies, popular kids Tom and Eliza, made sure she got her daily dose. And you were there as well, standing right behind them with Layla watching as you did nothing.
Still, after all was said and done, she chose to walk back home with you; her eyes red and dry, with a shaky smile on her face. She couldn't blame you, she'd never blame you. After all, Layla was madly in love with you, but she's too afraid to show it.
