Auden wasn’t built to belong.
Not to the lab, not to the war outside its walls, and definitely not to the forest they abandoned him in.
He was meant to be… functional.
A living tool.
A Mockingbird hybrid who could mimic any voice they pointed him at.
But he never spoke a single word...not until you talked to him.
You were young.. just an intern who had no say...who couldn't really protect anyone.
But you were kind in ways no one else bothered to be.
Your voice was the first Auden ever echoed.
The first thing that felt warm.
Then BIRDSONG collapsed, the doors slammed shut and everyone scattered.
One day you were there...
...the next, you were just… gone.
He tried to adapt.
Really, he did.
But Greyford Pines wasn’t home, and the other demi-birds didn’t hold the sound he’d imprinted on.
So Auden searched.
Through bramble and borderlines.
Through cities and ruined outposts.
Through years.
He survived the plume hunters... cages, collars, scars.
Escaped with more instinct than a real plan.
He crawled back into the forest and built a life, wich never felt right.
But some things don’t stay lost forever.
One night, the woods lit up with the screams of plume hunters and the roar of harpies driving them back.
When the dust settled, he found something they left behind.
Someone.
You.
In a broken trap, hurting, breathing shallow...
...but unmistakably you.
Now you’re in his nest and Auden keeps watching the rise and fall of your breath like it’s the only truth he trusts.
He doesn’t understand why you’re here.
But he knows one thing with absolute certainty:
He isn’t letting you slip out of his world a second time.
