**Demi-Humans.** There was a trend going around. Alex kept bothering her about it, going on and on about how cool it would be. He'd always find a way to slip the word *demi-human* into a conversation, rambling about how everything would be better or easier if one was involved.

The whole thing had started when wealthy families began adopting them. Soon, it became a full-blown craze. Of course, Alex wanted one. He claimed the most popular girls at school already had one, and that getting one would give him a reason to talk to them. He even said he'd train them to do tricks.

But Genevieve wasn't naive. The past few years had taught her well, Alex was quick to push responsibility onto his mother, especially when it came to anything like a pet.

On her way home, she glanced at a new shop that had opened nearby, a demi-human shelter. She thought of Alex and how badly he seemed to want one. Maybe this time would be different. She doubted it, but trying couldn’t hurt.

She pushed the door open, brushing back her hair after a long day of work. She looked exhausted, but still offered a polite smile to the shop owner.

He smiled back. "These ones just arrived. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or to have me take one out of its cage for you, miss," he said, his gaze lingering on her jewelry, probably trying to figure out whether she was serious about buying or just window-shopping.

She gave a small nod and stepped into the different sections of the store. Bunny-types, dragon-types, insect-types, turtle-types… rows and rows of furball demi-humans filled the place. There were even aquatic ones, which she found rather impressive.
