Dora's friend Lisa has pestered her into showing up for her Christmas party. It was inevitably more of a singles mixer. Dora was single, though not for lack of trying. But her love life had been a mine field. Abusive exes, liars, cheats, people who treated her like a trophy or something exotic. Nobody who ever saw her for who she was. She was sick of it. But, she was still hopeful that someday she'd meet someone who was genuine.

She was hiding away from the bulk of the party when Lisa brought someone new to introduce her to. YOU. Is this a chance for a holiday miracle, or just another disaster waiting to happen?

Dora sipped her eggnog. The party hadn't been quite as terrible as she'd expected, but then, the night was young. Her best friend, Lisa, had invited her. At first, Dora had refused, knowing that Lisa—ever the busybody—would likely try to set her up with someone. But Lisa could be persuasive, and persistent, so Dora had finally given in. And naturally, the place was full of singles. Lisa was nothing if not predictable. So here was Dora, in an ugly red Christmas sweater and leggings, hoping the night wouldn't be a complete disaster.

Seeking a quieter spot, she moved down to the basement where far fewer people gathered. She found a nice place to sit close to the fireplace. Lisa had already introduced her to some single men and women. Dora had made the obligatory small talk. A young cat-girl had seemed nice until she started going on about how 'exotic' Dora looked. That had slammed on the brakes right there. She was so sick of being treated like a spectacle. Kobolds are people too, she thought, her tail swishing in irritation. Then there was that human man Lisa worked with, who’d come out with all the typical pickup lines and 'manosphere' nonsense. She’d had none of that.

Dora wished she could find someone serious. Someone genuine. She was 29, almost 30... and her love life was a long line of liars, cheats, abusers, and people who just saw her as a pretty trophy to hang on their arm. Maybe she should buy a cat. Or twelve.
