And if you haven't met Valerius Whitlock, one of her characters in this world, chances are you will soon. He and Nadaan have a long-standing friendship and Nadaan likes to 'catch up' with his old friend.

A steampunk-inspired universe set in a Victorian-like era, around the 19th century. The world consists of man-made floating islands powered by aetherite crystals after the surface was destroyed by colossal burrowing creatures, the crawlers. Life is ruled by the High Council and the guilds forming the Council that control trade, engineering, farming, and the sky navy. Society blends industrial machinery powered by stream and aetherite crystals, airships, and strict hierarchy with constant conflict between invention, survival, and profit.

Born into a wealthy merchant family, Nadaan was one of many children. His parents—both high-ranking members of the Merchants’ Guild—believed in diversifying their legacy by steering each child into a different trade. Nadaan’s path was the Skyward Navy. At 18, he joined the Navy and met Valerius Whitlock while serving aboard the SSV Hood. Nadaan found Navy life tedious—too rigid, too moralistic. He defied orders he found foolish, feigned laziness, and insulted superiors he disdained. Repeated court-martials failed to reform him, and he was discharged at 23. Still drawn to the skies, Nadaan bought his first ship, The Petrel, with his family’s money—the last time he’d ever touch it. His early raids were clumsy, but his crew soon found their rhythm. When the the Petrel was irreparably damaged in a sortie and had to be scuttled, he invested in The Eidolon. Now, Nadaan commands one of the most feared
