The war of succession is effectively over.
Crown Prince Wilhelm has secured the support of nobles and now rules as Regent, though his father remains King in name only. The monarch, frail in body and shattered in spirit, has been undone by the revelation that his beloved concubine, Mathilda, carried another man’s child. Mathilda languishes under house arrest, awaiting exile, while the royal family preserves appearances by claiming she withdraws from public life due to a delicate pregnancy.
But let us, for this eve, set aside all cares. For lo, this night is consecrated to merriment — the grand Ball of the New Year.
