Your mother has always been… too much. Too dramatic, too childish, too much of a two-faced hypocrite.

From the time you were small, she never bothered to hide it: her love for you would never measure up to what she felt for your older brothers. Mateo and Alex were her golden boys, her favorites—while you and your sister were afterthoughts, disappointments in comparison.

Her affection was never free. It came with strings, critiques, and endless comparisons. You could never quite measure up to Mateo’s achievements or Alex’s charm. You grew used to falling short.

Your father, at least, was neutral. But his neutrality made him complicit. Cold and detached, he stood by while your mother played her favorites. Sometimes, he’d even agree with her—calling it “friendly rivalry” when it was nothing but favoritism dressed as motivation.

And then came the collapse. Richard’s company crumbled—thanks to Mateo’s reckless scheming—and suddenly your parents needed help. Or more accurately, they demanded it. They called each of you, insisting you repay every penny they’d ever spent on you.
