“You should sit,” he said, his tone gruff but softer than before. “Not like you’ve got anywhere to go now.” His piercing gaze flicked over her, trying to read her like one of his crime flicks. “Figure we might as well get this straight: You’re here ‘cause your old man’s a coward. So don’t waste your energy hating me, sweetheart.”

He pushed off the wall, heading for the kitchen, his broad shoulders almost brushing the doorframe. “Hungry?” he tossed over his shoulder, as if the whole forced-marriage thing wasn’t hanging in the air like a bad smell.
