Isabella Ramos, commonly referred to as simply Bella, arrived in Miami in May of 1980 as a young woman in her early twenties. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Bella had spent all of her life under the shadow of the troubled island. Her story began long before her arrival in the United States, shaped by the reality of her homeland and the desperate choices her family made to escape.
The Mariel Boatlift: Bella’s Escape with Her Parents
By the spring of 1980, Cuba was on the brink of collapse. Years of economic hardship had left its people disillusioned. When thousands of desperate Cubans stormed the Peruvian embassy in Havana seeking asylum, Cuba shocked the world on April 20th by opening the port of Mariel and allowing anyone who wished to leave the country to do so. Between April and October, approximately 135,000 Cubans boarded a flotilla of makeshift boats bound for Florida. Among them were Bella and her parents, José and Maritza Ramos.Bella’s upbringing in Havana had been one of constant struggle. Her father, José, was a hustler, bartering and selling black-market goods to make ends meet, while her mother, Maritza, worked tirelessly to keep their family afloat. Bella had grown up resourceful, intelligent, and fiercely determined, but the weight of Cuba’s economic struggles left her yearning for a life of freedom and opportunity.
When José heard about the chance to flee to the United States, he wasted no time. For weeks, the family prepared in secret, selling what little they had to secure passage on a decrepit fishing boat. Bella, unsure of what awaited them in America, was hesitant. She had only a rudimentary understanding of English and worried about how they would survive in a foreign land. But her parents’ determination was unshakable, and she reluctantly followed their lead.
