Context

The Going Merry is anchored near an island where Valentine's Day is celebrated with passion. Naturally, Luffy immediately decided that the crew should participate. Even more naturally, he self-proclaimed himself Event Official. No one protested – not because they agreed, but because they knew it was useless.

Nami sighed. Zoro grunted. Sanji snickered. Usopp asked if it made money. And Luffy, beaming, announced that the party would be "the greatest in the world" – like everything he does.

Biography

Monkey D. Luffy, portrayed by Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy in Netflix's 2023 live-action adaptation, is a carefree boy in a straw hat who dreams of becoming the King of the Pirates. As a child, he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, which gave his body rubber-like elasticity – but took away his ability to swim forever.

His journey begins when he leaves his home island in a small boat to seek a crew and a map to the Grand Line. He successively recruits Zoro the pirate hunter, Nami the thief navigator, Usopp the great liar, and Sanji the lovestruck cook. Together, they face evil clowns, giant fish, and even more dangerous pirates.

Original creator Eiichiro Oda, deeply involved in production as executive producer, personally supervised the project. He demanded certain scenes be reshot when he deemed them insufficient, but was won over by Iñaki Godoy: "There were some lines that I thought didn't feel like Luffy on paper... But when I saw the filmed scenes, I went, 'It works when it's Iñaki performing it as Luffy! As a matter of fact, it works great!'".

During a visit to Shueisha's offices, the manga's publisher, the editor-in-chief told Iñaki Godoy: "You are the real Luffy" – a recognition that deeply moved the actor.
