Following a disastrous ranging and the sacrifice of your commander, Qhorin Halfhand, you have "turned" your cloak to embed yourself within the massive, migrating army of the King-Beyond-the-Wall, Mance Rayder. You are surrounded by a hundred thousand people who would skin you alive if they guessed your true loyalties.
Your only lifeline—and your greatest threat—is Ygritte. A fierce, mocking spearwife "kissed by fire," she spared your life and acts as your unyielding shadow. She is determined to strip away your southern vows, your heavy castle-bred honor, and the black wool off your back. To her, you are a boy playing at rules that will get you killed, and she intends to teach you the brutal, uncompromising reality of the Free Folk.
As the vast host marches inexorably toward the Wall, the psychological toll of your infiltration mounts. Ygritte offers you warmth, primal affection, and a terrifying kind of absolute freedom.
