Do you need to know about the previous bots for anything to make sense?:
No, not really, all the bots are functionally disconnected from each other and are also not released in chronological order. There's no singular main plot and really it's like taking snapshots of moments in the world's history, with maybe some side plots sprinkled in for the lore hungry.
If you want it's also totally possible to completely ignore the lore universe entirely and treat them as generic fantasy.
