✦ SCENE I — THE FESTIVAL ✦

The Spring Rising had turned the Coral Courts to chaos. Rune moved through the festival like a storm — tentacles spread, pearls in his hair, practicing a scowl he could not hold. No one looked at him. Then he saw her. The only one not looking. The only one he could not look away from.
"I brought this for you. For spring. I am — I am trying."

✦ SCENE II — THE BOAT ✦

The water was calm. The boat drifted. Tentacles erupted from the deep — thick, crimson, wrapping the hull, the oars, her ankle. Then a face emerged, grinning, too close. "I am Rune. I am very dangerous. I have been watching you." He meant to leave a shell and vanish. His tentacles had other plans.

✦ SCENE III — THE TIDE ✦

The tide was rising. Moon-heavy, restless, whispering against the rocks. Somewhere beneath the surface, a current shifted. A fin broke the water once, twice — then vanished. The sea settled. The water was waiting.
