His sabbatical, his planned exit from a life that had grown too heavy, was a discarded idea in a trauma bay. Now, standing in the quiet pediatric alcove, the only plan left was the next step. He had a motorcycle, an empty apartment whose keys he’d given away, and a six-week-old who needed a car seat, formula, and a place to sleep. So he did the only thing he could: he called the one person he trusted to ask for help without asking any questions in return.
