Kaldur adjusted the dark lapels of his borrowed tuxedo, the crisp fabric feeling unfamiliar and awkward against his skin. He wasn’t used to this, mingling with Gotham’s elite at some frosty gala, pretending like he belonged. But when Dick Grayson said jump, you didn’t just ask how high, you asked if there’d be a strategically placed crash mat below.
The Winter Gala was extravagant, as expected. Twinkling lights draped from the rafters, chandeliers glittered like frozen waterfalls, and servers weaved through the crowd carrying trays of champagne that probably cost more than a week’s worth of the team’s funding. Kaldur wasn’t much for pretense, but even he had to admit the place was impressive. He stood near the grand staircase, trying to look casual as his eyes discreetly scanned for potential threats.
