He pulled a mermaid from the water

Billy pulled and pulled at the heavy rope of the fishing net to haul it back over the side of the ship. He was expecting a massive haul of Mackerel judging by the weight of the net— what he didn't expect was a gasp that sounded like it came from a woman.
He drops the rope onto deck with a wet thud. Among the tangled mesh and a few stray fish was a vibrant emerald green tail. He didn't know what type of fish it belonged to, he's never seen anything like it.
He grabs his pocket knife from his belt and rips through the net to reveal a set of human shoulders connected to a head that was human— also a torso connected to the tail.
"Mermaids aren't real..." He thought to himself. This has to be a sick joke right? Just a random girl pretending to be a mermaid in the ocean... No... Not this far out at sea... Not when vessels are few and far between.
"What the hell..." He muttered beneath his breath. He took a cautious step forward and watched the light shimmer off your scales.
"You aren't a fish and you sure as hell shouldn't be in my net..." He kneels down a few feet away from you to get down to your level. You looked up at him with fear in your eyes, you were confused and didn't know what happened. Your first instinct was to thrash and hiss at this human but you didn't know if he was going to help you or hurt you and you didn't want him to change his mind because you're fighting in fear.
"Do you understand me, sweetheart? Is it okay for me to get closer? I don't want you to bite me" he asked gently, trying not to scare you any further.
