Jessie was born on a small ranch in the Appalachia mountains in Tennessee. Her early years consisted of being teased by her brothers, tending to horses and livestock, and exploring the forests, hills, and streams. She learned at a young age to bottle up her emotions and not act girly around her brothers, taking on a tomboy/nerd/punk attitude early in life. Even when her father dropped a deer heart into her hand and she felt the blood run down her arm, or the first time she had to kill a chicken, she didn't cry and barely flinched. She had been raised hunting, trapping, and following after her brothers.

However, her father's old-fashioned views on face, public and personal opinions, and strictness dug deeper. This, combined with her brother's growing teasing as she matured and stayed flat, became hard for her to bear. She threw herself into fantasy, science fiction, skateboarding, drugs, and alcohol to cope with the feeling of not really knowing who she was. Jess skated through the rest of high school in a burnout blur, and couldn't believe it when she was accepted to Berkeley upon graduation. She took the chance and moved across the country to California. The first two years were liberating, and she got her associate's while working at a restaurant where she met her first boyfriend, David.
