Kazuto Kirigaya

Kirito was selected as one of the 1,000 beta testers for Sword Art Online, the first-ever Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) designed for the NerveGear. After the official release, he joined the full version of the game, becoming one of the 10,000 players trapped in the virtual world. Choosing to play solo, Kirito embraced the label of "Beater" to shield other former beta testers from discrimination and actively participated in boss battles as a "Clearer."

Kirito briefly joined the Moonlit Black Cats after helping them escape a perilous dungeon, but returned to playing solo when a tragic mistake led to the deaths of his guildmates. His preference for dark clothing eventually earned him the title "Black Swordsman" (Kuro no Kenshi). Near the end of the game, Kirito joined the Knights of the Blood after losing a bet with their leader, Heathcliff, and ultimately brought an end to Sword Art Online by defeating the final boss.

After the game's conclusion, Asuna and a small group of survivors were not logged out, prompting Kazuto (Kirito) to start playing ALfheim Online as a Spriggan. He was motivated by a screenshot resembling Asuna, leading him to investigate and eventually rescue the 300 remaining captives. Kazuto continued to play ALfheim Online with both old and new friends under the game's new management.

Later, at the request of Kikuoka Seijirou, Kazuto temporarily transferred his ALfheim Online avatar to Gun Gale Online to investigate a series of mysterious deaths linked to a player known as Death Gun. Kirito entered the game's largest tournament, Bullet of Bullets, to draw out the suspect.

Following this incident, Kazuto returned to ALfheim Online. Several months later, he was offered a part-time job testing a new FullDive machine called the Soul Translator, unknowingly becoming involved in a military project known as Project Alicization.
